5 Travel planning mistakes you might not know you are making

Travel planning is important. It isn’t rocket science but it is a science, definitely. Even seasoned travelers who thought they have mastered the art of booking plane tickets, buying new gear, and mapping out their itinerary can commit planning mistakes that can have a huge effect on the entire trip. You might be making some costly planning blunders and not even realize it. Here are the five huge travel planning mistakes that you might not know you’re making.

5. Not breaking in your new travel gears

Like your new shoes and other equipment, it is important that you try out and break in your travel gears. For instance, if you just bought a new travel backpack or new hiking shoes, it is important that you take them first for a test drive. Try to simulate what you plan to do with them in your trip so you can see if they are suitable travel companions. Walk around your neighborhood or hike nearby with your new boots. Test out your new backpack in a short-distance trail. Always make sure you have tried your gears and you aren’t using them for the first time in your destination.

4. Not reading about the local culture

When traveling, it is important that you are aware, mindful, and respectful of the local culture. The culture in your destination may be way different from what you are used to so it is important to research about them ahead of time. You might be unintentionally breaking some traditions if you are unaware of them. So, make sure you try to learn the local culture to know what to expect once you touch down.

3. Not checking reviews

Whether it is booking a tour, reserving a hotel room, or trying out a local restaurant, you might want to stay ahead by checking reviews. This way, you avoid getting disappointed and you can set your expectations accordingly. Whether or not you’re on the fence about adding something to your itinerary, go ahead and read some reviews anyway. Reviews from people who have actually tried what you are about to try can help you make an informed decision.

2. No optimizing the space in your luggage

It is important that you have enough time when packing your luggage so you optimize its space (and weight). Also, it is important to know what stuff to put in your carry-on luggage and what to put in your checked-in luggage. For instance, medicines, a change of clothes, and other valuables should be in your carry-on. Meanwhile, liquids of a certain amount should be on your checked-in luggage or you might not be able to bring them on your trip.

1. Booking flights too far in advance

Although it isn’t recommended to book your flight last-minute, it can also be a costly mistake booking flights too far in advance. The reason is that it might not be the best price for the flight and it can be more difficult to book other things related to said flight. Apparently, the cost of booking too early can sometimes be the same as the cost of booking too late. As a rule of thumb, book domestic flights one to three months from flight date and book international flights three to six months prior.
