This February, the UP Economics Towards Consciousness (UP ETC) will be celebrating its foundation day through its yearly Consciousness Month, a month-long initiative bringing together different sectors of the Filipino society in pursuit of meaningful social action and positive change.Â
This youth group has lined up some interesting activities for their project, and here are just a few reasons why you wouldn’t want to miss it:
- Meet inspiring advocacy groups
The project will kick off on February 10 with the Alliance Day, a webinar featuring advocacies of various organizations and a lecture on the importance of legislation and lobbying in forwarding social advocacies. This could be your chance to finally meet like-minded people who are passionate about making a difference!
- Get value-adding knowledge, for free!
On February 19, there will also be an educational forum on the topic of bridging the digital divide during the COVID-19 pandemic through a multi-sectoral discussion called Kapekonomiya. Learn from distinguished speakers free of charge and take part in a timely discussion on how our country is coping with this pandemic. Bonus: All Consciousness Month events are free and certificates of participation will be given to all attendees!
- Get the chance to win prizes
The celebration will also feature a 3-day event called Youth in Action, a webinar and case study competition series for high school students aiming to foster a deeper understanding of the youth’s role in advocating for good governance amidst the pandemic. Again, registration is free, and the competition offers Php 10,000 cash prize for the winners.
Entitled Bouncing Back from the Pandemic: A look at the road to recovery of key sectors in the Philippines, Consciousness Month 2021 seeks to explore the progress to recovery of crucial sectors in the country, with particular emphasis on the role of the youth, the economy, and the government.Â

About the UP Economics Towards Consciousness
The UP Economics Towards Consciousness (UP ETC) is the sole official academic-political university-wide organization based in the UP School of Economics. The late 70s saw social and political turmoil under the Marcos dictatorship, a turmoil which the administration could neither hide behind the facades of peace and progress it sought to project nor through outright repression of dissent among people. It was in this context that twelve economics students led by founding Chairperson Orville Solon, now Dean of the UPSE Faculty, formally established the UP Economics Towards Consciousness on February 10, 1979, seeking to debunk the mythical “golden age” of Marcos’s economy. Forty-two years later, UP ETC continues to produce quality leaders of the university and the nation, being home to 3 UP Diliman University Student Council (USC) Chairpersons and an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, among others.
