At Barangay Payatas B,  CANVAS or the Center for Art, New Ventures, and Sustainable Development, together with Bb. Pilipinas queens, give away art story books to the children of Payatas Football Club. The book giving activity is a part of CANVAS’ 1 Million Books for 1 Million Filipino Children Campaign.

With the help of Bb. Pilipinas Foundation and Araneta Foundation, CANVAS gives full-color story books to 150 children that Fairplay for All Foundation supports through football training. Most of the 150 children are members of the Payatas Football Club. The Payatas Football Club is the Philippines’ official representative to the Street Child World Cup.  This world cup brings together teams of street children from different countries to compete and increase awareness of the situation of street children throughout the world. The book-giving coincides with Fairplay for All Foundation’s celebration of the founding anniversary of its drop-in center.

Recognizing the unfavorable condition of education in the country, CANVAS hopes to raise literacy among children by donating full-color books of their stories, most of which are winners of their annual Romeo Forbes Children’s Story Writing Competition. Written by Filipino authors and illustrated by some of the country’s finest artists (Elmer Borlongan, Plet Bolipata, Liv Vinluan, Rodel Tapaya, just to name a few), CANVAS stories hope to evoke in children a love for books, as well as an awareness of Philippine art. Some of their books have won the Gintong Aklat Award (1995) and the National Children’s Book Award (2012).

These award-winning stories are distributed for free to public schools, hospitals, and underprivileged communities across the country. Through its 1 Million Books for 1 Million Filipino Children Campaign, CANVAS has already given 56,000 story books to children nationwide. In October 2013, CANVAS sent 4,000 books to aid the psychosocial debriefing of children affected by the Zamboanga siege. The organization has also sent and is still sending thousands of books to children survivors of Haiyan affected areas.

About the 1 Million Books for 1 Million Filipino Children Campaign

CANVAS hopes to give away one million books to one million children in the next 5-10 years. The program promotes independent reading and creative thinking in Filipino children while also exposing them to the best of contemporary Filipino art and literature. It also helps empower children to think creatively, learn on their own and strengthen their love of books. These are skills that will stay and help all – even those who drop out of school – to achieve success all through their lives. For companies, organizations and individuals who want to partner with CANVAS as book sponsor, volunteer or to nominate communities to receive books, contact info@canvas.ph or (02) 585.6984 and 63.915.953.4399.
