It looks like John Lloyd Cruz is indeed slowly moving back to showbiz, as he is set to star in a movie that will be released this year. That in itself is exciting, but another thing that we’re looking forward to is his reunion with ex-girlfriend Shaina Magdayao.
Together, they will star in Servando Magdamag, directed by Lav Diaz and based on a short story written by Ricky Lee.
Now, Black Sheep has released a video showing a few scenes from the film, and Lav and Ricky explaining what people can expect.
Ricky says that Lav first read Servando Magdamag when he was a college freshman. Since then, Lav was inspired to adapt it into a film.
According to Ricky, “Si Lav, hindi na niya binitawan.” [“Lav never let go of the idea of turning it into a film.”]
Both luminaries had been planning on adapting it for many years but it kept stalling. Finally, in 2019, the two agreed to push through.
Initially, the two had difficulty adapting Ricky’s “stream of consciousness” style of writing.
Lav found a workaround by changing and revising some parts.
According to Lav, Servando Magdamag follows the death of the Monzon family. “Nasa crossroads [si Servando]. ‘Tapusin ko ba ang mahabang kasaysayang ng karahasan ng Monzon?”
[“Servando is at a crossroads. It is up to him to decide if the Monzon’s history of violence ends with him.”]
John Lloyd will play Servando.
This is John Lloyd’s first starring role since Finally Found Someone in 2017. Last year, he had a special guest appearance in the Metro Manila Film Festival entry Culion. He was with Shaina for two years until their breakup in 2012.
