If you’re not yet familiar, TOMS is an international movement to put shoes on the feet of those who need it the most: the kids!
What may seem as the most trivial of things, going barefoot, is actually an epidemic that’s hurting the youth of the world. Kids from distant villages with no shoes are forced to stop schooling or to bare the pain of walking through deserts and forests to just get some water. Wounds, scars and bruises on their feet often lead to infections and diseases, among other things.
It was TOMS that came up with a very simple idea, the ONE FOR ONE campaign. Every pair of TOMS Shoes you purchase automatically means that TOMS will also donate one pair of TOMS Shoes to a child in need.
It’s a simple idea that has people from all over the world, politicians and celebrities, all talking about and supporting this empowering movement.
At this “Day without Shoes” event, TOMS wanted to bring awareness to the world about the children who need our help the most.
The best news is that TOMS is now here in the Philippines and here to stay. Please support TOMS Philippines by checking out one of their official outlets and partner stores to get their ONE for ONE promise and give a child in need a pair of shoes that will change his / her life forever.
In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMS customers.
Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or going to school, these children are at risk:
• A leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through bare feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases, and the long-term physical and cognitive harm they cause.
• Wearing shoes also prevents feet from getting cuts and sores. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected.
• Many times children can’t attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don’t have shoes, they don’t go to school. If they don’t receive an education, they don’t have the opportunity to realize their potential.
