“The Accountant 2” Review: An Unexpectedly Funny Action Movie

Ben Affleck is back to reprise the titular role of “The Accountant” in a thrilling, high-adrenaline action movie with a surprisingly good amount of laughs.

The sequel to “The Accountant” set nine years after the events of the original film follows Affleck as Christian Wolff, an autistic accountant who launders money for dangerous criminals, who is roped into solving the disappearance of a missing Salvadoran family by current deputy director of FinCEN, Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), after the former director Raymond King (J.K. Simmons) is murdered for trying to launch the investigation. Christian proceeds to invite his estranged brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal) to help them with the case and, at the same time, receives constant aid from his hacker friend Justine (Allison Robertson).

“The Accountant 2,” much like its predecessor, isn’t short on violence, bloodshed, and tension. But what sets it apart is that it doesn’t shy away from playfulness. There were so many scenes that were effortlessly hilarious, particularly between Christian and Braxton whose terrible lack of social skills and contrasting personalities made their natural banter just shine. In fact, it’s the brothers’ relationship that truly kept us in the audience engaged, providing moments of comfort and laughter amidst a dark and intricate plot.

Suddenly, it’s like we weren’t watching an action flick anymore but a buddy comedy instead. And for a movie like “The Accountant 2” where simply replicating the novelty of a ruthlessly efficient yet endearingly awkward man won’t suffice, this unexpected pivot genuinely injected fresh energy into the story.

While I cannot say anymore in fear of spoiling the fun of watching “The Accountant 2,” I can definitely say that it lives up to the first film’s promise. Gritty yet charming, adrenaline-filled yet witty, violent yet heartfelt, “The Accountant 2” is a cinematic experience that’s well worth a trip to the theaters.

“The Accountant 2” is currently showing in Philippine cinemas. Rated R-13.
