Natalie Portman hopes to get a message across to The Academy with the stunning dress she wore to the Red Carpet on the 2020 Academy Awards.
The actress revealed that her standout statement piece, a Dior Haute Couture cape, had embroidered on it the names of all the female directors who were not nominated for an Oscar.

A video of Portman explaining her outfit was shared on Twitter in which she said: “I wanted to recognize the women who were not recognized for their incredible work this year in my subtle way.”
Some of the names included were Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Mati Diop (Atlantics), Alma Har’el (Honey Boy), and Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire).
None of these women were part of any of the categories for this year’s awards night apart from Greta Gerwig whose film was nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. However, she failed to be recognized as one of the Best Directors who are composed of only men.

Portman had previously called out another awards show, the Golden Globes, at the time she was a presenter for the Best Director award back in 2018. Before introducing the nominees, she said: “And here are the all-male nominees.”
Currently, only five women have ever been nominated for Best Director in the Academy Awards, the last one being Greta Gerwig for her film Lady Bird.
