Joe Dempsie Talks ‘Game of Thrones’ at the AsiaPOP Comic Con 2016

At the AsiaPOP Comic Con 2016, I had the privilege to meet Joe Dempsie (aka Gendry in Game of Thrones) and join a media interview where different media personalities asked him questions about all things related to the series. Here are his answers to several questions we had regarding the now-terribly-missed show:

Where is Gendry?

Gendry has been missing from the show ever since the end of season 3 and we’ve been missing him terribly. Naturally, the first question on everyone’s mind was: when will he be back? Sadly, Joe doesn’t know the answer to that, either. “I don’t know when he’s going to return, but I would love to,” he said. We would love for him to return, too!!!

What would you want Gendry’s comeback to be like, if ever?

Let’s pretend for a second that Gendry will be back for sure. How would Joe want his comeback to be like? He says he’d want to swoop in and save an important character from dying, like Jon Snow. “Saving Jon Snow and his beautiful hair from imminent death would be a nice way to come back,” he says.

Joe adds that he would love to work with Kit Harington since they weren’t able to work together on ‘Game of Thrones’ so far. In case you didn’t know, ‘Game of Thrones’ is filmed at different locations at different times depending on the scene, so there are times when cast members never actually see each other during filming!

Who do you miss from the Game of Thrones cast?

In ‘Game of Thrones’, Joe Dempsie is actually in the same age group as a lot of other cast members, including Finn Jones, Richard Madden, Oona Chaplin, and Gwendoline Christie, most of which have already died in the series. While he misses everyone, though, he says he loves Gwendoline Christie! (Gwendoline Christie plays Brienne of Tarth.)

How would you want Gendry to die?

I’m personally rooting for Gendry to live as long as possible, but just in case the ‘Game of Thrones’ writers decide to crush her hearts (like they do oh-so-very-often), Joe says he would want for his character to die in a battle, whether that’s with a dragon or a human being.

“You don’t want an embarrassing death in ‘Game of Thrones’, like you don’t wanna trip over a stray chicken and break your neck,” he points out. “As long as it’s not embarrassing, I don’t mind. So, as long as I don’t trip over a banana or stab myself with my own sword, I’m okay with it.”

If you weren’t Gendry, which Game of Thrones character would you want to play?

Joe gushed about his fascination with Ramsay Bolton at the media interview, and with what Iwan Rheon did with the character. He also shared that he loves Theon Greyjoy’s character beyond what Alfie Allen did with it because of how he transitions to Reek and then back to Theon. “I think Theon would be a fun role to play,” he says. “I say ‘fun’, but realize he spent most of one season screaming, so I’m not sure about the ‘fun’ part anymore.”

Which character would you kill off next if you were George R.R. Martin?

“Littlefinger! Because he can’t be trusted.”

Which House would you want to belong to?

If he weren’t of Baratheon lineage, Joe says he would want to be in House Stark if given the choice because of their admirable values.

Who do you think should sit on the Iron Throne?

“King Gendry, obviously!” Now wouldn’t that be the day!

As for Manila, Joe shared that he had a great time touring the city. “It’s nice to get a feel for the Philippines’ culture and history, and what makes Manila the city that it is and the people that they are,” he says. Joe toured Intramuros, rode a kalesa, and went clubbing during his first few days in the city. We really hope he falls in love with the place, so that he’ll come back again soon!
