The man suspected of the attack was finally arrested last Wednesday after spending 10 months in the hospital. He received treatment for the serious burns that came as a result of the fire at Kyoto Animation. Japanese police had issued an arrest warrant for Shinji Aoba back in July but were unable to question him until he had recovered.

According to a police official, Aoba was arrested at a Kyoto hospital and brought to police headquarters for further questioning. Up until this point, Aoba had been unable to walk on his own due to his injuries.

In a police statement, Aoba is alleged to have gone to Kyoto Animation and poured gasoline inside the building. The blaze killed a total of 36 people. Aoba is also suspected of the attempted murder of another 34 people.

Media reports claim that Aoba’s motive was his belief that the animation studio had plagiarized his novel.
