Princess hangs up her crown to clean and cook for COVID-19 frontliners

Princess Sofia of Sweden temporarily hangs up her crown and starts working at a hospital that treats patients who test positive for the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19). This is her contribution to help in Sweden’s fight against the pandemic.

The 35-year-old royalty finished a three-day intensive training program online, which will allow her to volunteer at Sophiahemmet Hospital in Stockholm.

Princess Sofia has joined the hospital as a healthcare assistant, according to The Royal Central. She will clean and do kitchen shifts to support the healthcare workforce.

Tack!

“I am now placed in one of the hospital’s care departments, where together with other newly trained colleagues, I support and relieve the healthcare staff with different tasks,” she wrote on Instagram. “To have the opportunity to help at this difficult time is extremely rewarding.” Her responsibilities include cleaning and assisting in-patient care.

“Princess Sofia is not only Sophia’s honorary chairman, but now also works with us,” Sophiahemmet Hospital wrote on Instagram. “This is after having completed our basic nursing education which has been developed to relieve the now severely strained healthcare staff.”

The online course by Sophiahemmet Hospital trains people with a non-medical background in support duties, which can include cleaning, working in the kitchen, disinfecting equipment and more. The hospital is training up to 80 people a week to ease the burden on medical workers.

While the royalty usually gets attention for their crowns, gowns, and castles, they are deemed as public servants at the end of the day. It looks like a lot of them like Sofia are rising to this unprecedented occasion.
