It Looks Like You’ll Have to Say Goodbye to Your Travel Plans for 2020

For people who have plans to travel this 2020, you’ll probably have to put if off for the next year.

According to Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, “International travel might not happen this year. At this point in time, traveling (abroad) is but a dream.”

To date, local airlines have canceled flights up to May 15, in lieu of the extension of the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

However, given that there is still no vaccine for COVID-19, the Department of Tourism has developed plans for a “new normal” in the tourism industry while there is still no vaccine.

Under the new normal, hotels and accommodation facilities, tourism transport services, and tourism-related establishments like exhibit venues, restaurants, and spas will undergo mandatory regular sanitation and disinfection. Tourism workers will also be provided with sanitation devices such as personal protective equipment (PPEs). These hotels and facilities will regularly be checked.

Hotels are also asked to develop new ways for them to do contactless check-in so guests can get their keycards and go straight to their rooms. Breakfast buffets may be replaced with bento boxes, and tables may have to be spaced wider apart.

Moreover, tourism transportation, restaurants, and tourist spots will be asked to lessen the number of guests at any given time to facilitate social distancing.
