Meet Isa Briones, The Filipina Actress at The Center of The Latest ‘Star Trek’ Series

When I was reading about Star Trek: Picard, the brand new Star Trek series following the life of former Starfleet Captain Jean-Luc Picard, I delighted with the fact that there were familiar names on the cast list.

Aside from Patrick Stewart returning to his role as Picard himself, the cast also included Brent Spiner, Alison Pill, Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Harry Treadaway, and Evan Evagora. However, one of the names that really struck me was Isa Briones.

The Fil-Am actress was familiar to me because of her work on Hamilton, where she became the youngest actor in the national tour. She played Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in the touring cast sometime last year. At the same year, Isa won an Ovation Award for her role as Natalie in the musical Next to Normal.

Aside from her work in theater, she’s also starred in Hollywood films such as Takers, Brown Soup Thing, and Lonely Boy.

If you think her last name sounds familiar, it’s because Isa is the daughter of Jon Jon Briones, a Filipino theater and TV actor who was part of the original West End cast of Miss Saigon where Lea Salonga starred as Kim.

We still don’t know much about Isa’s role in the new Star Trek series, only that she’s playing a major character that could change the course of Picard’s peaceful life. Star Trek: Picard is set 20 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) and will come to the small screen in early 2020.
