March 2024 is going to be the final time that fans of the mecha anime Gundam can visit the life-sized moving statue located at the Gundam Factory Yokohama facility in Tokyo.
Gundam Factory Yokohama opened in December 2020, allowing visitors from all over the world to see the grand spectacle that is an 18-meter-tall RX-78-2 Gundam from the 1979 series “Mobile Suit Gundam” which can move its head and limbs, walk forward, and kneel. The attraction was originally supposed to be open until the end of March 2021 but was extended to March 2023 in order to give foreigners a chance to see it themselves as travel restrictions ease up. A final extension to March 2024 was then granted.
Gundam Factory Yokohama also includes a cafe, a gift shop, and a museum.
Tickets for pre-purchase are being sold online in batches. The next (and last) batch of tickets for the dates between March 16 and 31 will go on sale on March 1 at 10AM Japan time. Limited same-day tickets will still be available to buy at the factory.
It is unknown if the entire attraction will close down permanently or will just reopen at another location in Japan. We’ll be crossing our fingers that it’s the latter though!
