DLSU ENGLICOM’s 2021 Chinese New Year Celebration!

ENGLICOM is the premier Filipino-Chinese socio-civic organization in De La Salle University. The organization’s mission is to promote the Chinese culture to fellow Lasallians in the community through celebrating events such as the Lunar New Year, bridging both Filipinos and Chinese in this event. 

The pandemic has caused many difficulties and turned our lives upside down; however, this doesn’t mean that we should halt the traditions and the fun. Englicom presents one of the biggest celebrations in De La Salle University- celebrate the Year of the Ox this 2021 as Chinese New Year went online!

The week-long virtual celebration showcased the different aspects of Chinese culture which included performances, games, and many exciting prizes for event goers. From Dragon and Lion Dances to song numbers from DLSU performing organizations and artists to trivia, let’s have a recap of last March 1-5, 2021! 

 

March 1 (Monday) 

12:00 PM- 1:00 PM Mass (Livestream)

1:00 PM – 1:30 PM Lion Dance (Livestream)

4:00 PM – 5:30 PM Send Food (Bring Me)

Starting off the week and celebration with the opening mass streamed by the LSPO Facebook Page with Most Rev. Leopoldo Jaucian, SVD, DD as the presider. Afterwards, holding the opening ceremony to the event with the iconic Dragon Dance! The audience’s observational skills were also tested with a game wherein the first three winners who correctly guessed the number of times the dragon blinked in the duration of the performance were presented with exciting prizes! Moving on to the last event for the day.. SEND FOOD! Participants took part in a two-part kahoot game with prizes on the line! Finally, closing with a raffle at the end for one lucky winner! 

 

March 2 (Tuesday)

4:00 PM – 6:00 PM Understanding Your HorOxscope (Horoscope Consultation Livestream)

8:00 PM – 9:00 PM The Price is Right

 

The festivities don’t just stop there! Greeting the second day of the celebration, a Horoscope Consultation livestream led by speaker Ms. Jean Yu-Chua, introducing the Chinese Zodiac and other related information before delving into the consultation for this 2021. The interactive livestream aimed to provide the audience an opportunity to understand their horOxscope. The consultation had Ms. Jean Yu-Chua answering the audience’s questions regarding their luck, wealth, compatibility to say a few pertaining to their respective zodiac signs. The following event featured a game of “The Price is Right.” Teams of 3 to 5 participants were given the opportunity to showcase their foodie knowledge as they battled out 3 rounds of increasing difficulty to guess the price of the dish presented. Prizes were given to the top 2 teams with the most points earned! 

 

March 3 (Wednesday)

4:00 PM – 5:30 PM Fil-Chi Connection (Kahoot)

8:00 PM – 9:00 PM Lai Tsia (Mukbang Livestream)

Halfway through the celebration and Englicom still had more in store for event goers! Fil-Chi Connection comprised two rounds of Kahoot games which tested the participants’ knowledge on Chinese culture with more exciting prizes on the line. Afterwards, the night ended with a mukbang livestream titled “Lai Tsia” which means “Come eat.” Iconic dishes such as sweet and sour pork as well as dimsum were featured. Not only that! Games were also held during the livestream as participants had to guess the dimsum being showcased. The event ended with a total of 15 winners and a crowd of people craving for the dishes shown. 

 

March 4 (Thursday)

Whole Day Event Escaping the Great Walls (Group Escape Room)

4:00 PM – 5:30 PM Wheel of Fortune (Livestream Raffle)

 

The end of the week is nearing but the festivities keep on going! Escaping the Great Walls was conducted as a whole day event wherein several groups would compete for the fastest time to escape from the monster- Nian. Many puzzles and riddles were presented to aid the participants on their escape until one group emerged victorious. Thought that was the only game? More prizes are waiting to be given out and the following event, Wheel of Fortune, gave participants the chance to win more of the exciting prizes Englicom had in store! From food to clothing to accessories, there was no end to these amazing prizes and ended the night with lucky winners having a great time. 

 

March 5 (Friday)

4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Doodle With Me (Skribbl.io Tournament)

5:00 PM – 6:00 PM Jeopardy

6:00 PM – 7:30 PM One Lucky Night: The Grand Raffle

 

The last day but not the least as Englicom pulled out all the stops by filling the day with prizes. Starting the day with a Skribbl.io Tournament titled “Doodle With Me.” The participants’ drawing and guessing abilities in relation to Chinese culture were tested as they competed and 5 winners walked away with prizes by the end of the event. Straight after, a game of Jeopardy was held and teams competed with each other, choosing categories and answering the corresponding questions. After an exciting tie-breaker round, one team was presented as the winner of Jeopardy. 

 

The finale event of this year’s Chinese New Year celebration was “One Lucky Night: The Grand Raffle” where amongst the many prizes to be won, a grand prize awaited participants at the end. Moreover, several intermission numbers by talented Lasallian artists and performing organizations as they showcased their singing and dancing prowess. The raffle only included individuals who were eligible as they were able to attend at least one event during the week. During the spinning of the wheel, it could be clearly seen the sheer number of people who took part in the week-long celebration as even the hosts had a hard time reading the names since they were so small. It was both a nerve-racking and thrilling moment as the wheel spun and names kept being called as everyone hoped to be the lucky winner of the grand prize worth more than Php 30,000!
