Pope Francis supports the passage of civil union laws for same-sex couples

Pope Francis has surprised us yet again, announcing his utmost support for homosexual unions. He has shown support and love to the LGBTQ+ community in the past, but making a statement like this where he wants to back the legal side of same-sex unions is something that is turning heads in a church that has had a history of putting down same-sex couples and homosexuality in general. Past popes have even called the LGBTQ+ community deviant so this may cause a great shift in thinking in Catholic countries and communities all over the world.

“What we have to create is a civil union law,” the pope says in the documentary “Francesco” which was released in Rome just yesterday. “That way they are legally covered.”

In an interview with the filmmaker, he went on to say, “They’re children of God and have a right to a family, nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it.”

While it may not be a huge step in other places, it certainly is sparking conversation in more conservative countries that still see same-sex marriage as illegal and immoral. If the Pope himself is supporting it and is welcoming of the LGBTQ+ community, it puts into question all the rules and laws set against the community. People have since been debating online about it and many are rethinking stances.
