Since 1948, AIESEC has been striving to achieve the peace and fulfillment of humankind’s potential through cultural exchange. In over 200 countries, the organization has helped develop the leadership skills of the youth while directing its communities towards the path of sustainability. One such community is Barangay Lawaguin, the partner of AIESEC in University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).
Barangay Lawaguin is home to around 135 families and faces multiple social and environmental problems. In the past year of its partnership with AIESEC, several international volunteers have assisted the community in combating their malnutrition problem through feeding programs, mushroom farming, and seminars.
However, in the middle of the next project on reducing plastic waste for the community, the COVID-19 crisis began. The international volunteers were forced to leave the country early and the Philippines’ communities had to go through the quarantine. Barangay Lawaguin has since been reliant on relief goods from their local government unit. Although assisted by the government, the unexpected extension of the lockdowns has made food scarce in the area. Even the said relief operations have not been able to sufficiently provide for the individuals of the community.
Due to this, AIESEC in UPLB started a donation drive entitled “Kalingain ang Lawaguin”. Through it, the entity aims to raise PHP 150 000 to supply Lawaguin with disinfectants and food supplies. The first supply run has already been achieved with water, canned goods, rice, basic hygiene supplies, and snacks were given to each family. But, more donations are necessary to conduct the second supply run. AIESEC in UPLB needs all the help they can get to make this donation drive as successful as possible. The collection of donations shall happen until May 30, 2020.
