Even with the ongoing Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) and the enhanced Community Quarantine, life goes on. And as the days go by, the looming deadline of our monthly bills and taxes draws close.
While April is usually a busy month for taxpayers, the issue lies in the uncertainty about the days to come. Thankfully, the Department of Finance (DOF) and the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) have agreed to extend the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns— taking Covid-19 into consideration.
According to a statement by Senator Bong Go, he realized that safeguarding the health and lives of Filipinos was more important. Thus, he appealed to both departments for an extension. He also discussed the issue with colleagues in the Senate, such as Senate President Vicente Sotto III, Majority Leader Miguel Zubiri, Senators Imee Marcos, Francis Tolentino, Pia Cayetano, Joel Villanueva, Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, Nancy Binay, Ramong “Bong” Revilla and Panfilo Lacson. All the senators shared the same statements, even President Rodrigo Duterte and Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III.
It was then decided that the deadline would be extended by a month— on May 15, 2020, to be specific. Guidelines on the extension will be released soon after by the concerned agency.
Senator Go cites that “This will give our people a chance to focus on their safety and the welfare of their family at this crucial time. After we overcome this health situation, we trust that they will faithfully fulfill their tax obligations.”
