Here’s the Latest Update on San Juan City during the Coronavirus Outbreak

The Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) has spared no one, which is why cases have been increasing to date— even in San Juan city. And with 15 confirmed cases, Mayor Francis Zamora was forced to take action with a city-wide ordinance just today.

Upon the recommendation of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, San Juan is now under the State of Calamity. The official memo can be found in Mayor Zamora’s Facebook page.

To summarize, the memo first highlights everything there is to know about Covid-19…

  1. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Covid-19 as a pandemic
  2. March 7: the Department of Health (DOH) raised the Covid-19 alert to Code Red Sublevel 1
  3. March 8: President Rodrigo Duterte placed the country under a State of Public Health Emergency
  4. March 12: the alert level was raised to Code Red Sublevel 2
  5. March 13: the whole Metro Manila was placed under Community Quarantine
  6. March 14: a memo was released, which urged all Local Government Units (LGUs) to declare a State of Calamity in their respective areas.

… followed by present news that yes, San Juan is now in a State of Calamity. The growing cases in the country and in the city itself and the potential risk of growing cases if nothing is to be done was what brought about this decision. Thus, Mayor Zamora is authorized to use 30% of the Quick Response Fund from the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund (LDRRMF) to provide emergency services and supplies to the public during the outbreak.

We hope that with the funding, San Juan can save more lives, reduce health impacts and ensure the safety of the public during the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. For more details, read the official memo here.
