‘Mean Girls’ Is Getting A Remake…But It’s Not What You’re Expecting

Pop culture icons The Plastics are set to return to the big screen in another Mean Girls flick. But their comeback won’t just be a watered-down sequel or needless reboot. This time, we’re traversing the walls of high school to the tune of musical theatre.

That’s right, this Mean Girls remake will actually be an adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway production of the same name.  So it will be a movie-turned-musical-turned-back-to-movie.

Tina Fey, who wrote the film and stage production, recently announced the news.

“I’m very excited to bring ‘Mean Girls’ back to the big screen,” Fey said in a statement. “It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences. I’ve spent sixteen years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly.”

The 2004 movie centered around Lindsay Lohan’s Cady Heron navigating life as a teenager and balancing all the trappings of high school. It was produced into a musical in 2017 by Lorne Michaels, Stuart Thompson, Sonia Friedman, and Paramount Pictures. The movie musical will reunite Fey, composer Jeff Richmond and lyricist Nell Benjamin.
