Double standards. It’s something that every woman has experienced and continues to experience, even in today’s day and age. Even Taylor Swift experiences it, it seems. In her song ‘The Man’ off of her new album released today, Taylor touches on how unfair it is to be a woman in today’s world while imagining how powerful she would be seen if she were a man.
If you’re a woman, you probably know what I mean when I say that you are treated differently compared to the men in your life. When you keep changing boyfriends, you’re seen as a flirt; but when men do it, they’re playboys. When you work hard and succeed at work, there are times when people will question your relationship with your boss; but when men do it, they’re simply smart and powerful. Even women’s clothes get nitpicked wherever we go, while men can get away with wearing practically anything. Taylor touches on all of this in ‘The Man’, even referencing Leonardo DiCaprio in the verse, “They would toast to me, let the players play. I’d be just like Leo in Saint Tropez.”
‘The Man’ comes out at a perfect time – a time where women need to feel more empowered in society, a time where sexism still runs rampant wherever we go. We simply love how Taylor faces issues like this head-on and speaks up about the things that she believes in.
