80-year-old Salavacio Nacario will finally be graduating high school this April. Salavacio, also known as Lola Sally, talked about the reason why she still pursued her education even at a late age. She said in an interview with GMA7’s Front Row, “Kahit may edad na ako, gusto ko pang matuto. At masaya ako kapag nakikita ko ‘yung mga classmates ko na nagbibiruan, pero magagaling sila. At magalang din sa akin. Pag sinabi ko na, ‘Anak, ano ba ‘yung mga assignment natin?’ [Sasabihin nila,] ‘Hayaan mo, ‘Nay, tulungan ka namin.’ Nawawala yung problema ko kapag nasa paaralan ako.”
[English translation:Â Even if I am of age, I still want to learn. I’m happy when I see my classmates joking around, but they are really good at studying. And they are very respectful. When I ask them, ‘What’s our assignment?’ They reply, ‘Don’t worry, grandma, we will help you. My problems vanish when I’m at school.”
Lola Sally is the eldest daughter in her family. She had to quit school to help her parents. Back then, she only managed to finish her second year in high school.
In the said interview, she also gave tips to young students. She said, “Kayong mga bata, [isipin niyo] ‘yung baon niyo araw-araw, ‘yung pag-aasikaso ng mga magulang niyo. Sikapin niyong makatapos kayo at matupad ang mga pangarap niyo.”
[English translation: Children, think about the things your parents do for you. Work hard so you can graduate and fulfill your dreams.]
