5 Easy Ways to Start Your Musical Journey

Everyone has their own way to relax amidst the pressure and stress from our environment. Some turn to physical activities like yoga or jogging, while others pour out their stress by painting and making creative ideas come to life.

Music is another way for people to relax. It is where you are introduced to a complex world that intertwines your senses to produce a piece of art that is soothing to the soul. As a person who plays instruments myself, I agree. When the stress from school reaches a point where it overwhelms me, I drop everything and turn to my instrument, and I play until I clear my mind for the remaining tasks I must accomplish.

We musicians have been given a way to relax, and many people want to join us, as well. However, the task of learning an instrument may seem daunting, and most give up even before they relish in the sweet melody the strings or keys of their instrument can produce.

Despite how difficult it may seem, though, many can actually start their musical journey with ease. All it takes is some practice, inspiration, and a little bit of confidence. Wise words by Stephen King can help uplift us on our journey: “The scariest part is always just before you start. After that, things can only get better.”

Having your own musical journey will refresh and inspire you.

If you want to play a musical instrument, you must choose what you want to play. Of course, every musician starts by learning music theory, but it would be a lot better if you already have something that you can apply what you’ve learned for the day.

There are a lot of instruments you can choose from. There are instruments that use strings and keys, and there are wind and percussion instruments, as well.

One of the most common musical instruments – the keyboard

It is important to remember that you can always play two instruments at the same time or switch to another instrument if you wish to do so. I started my musical journey by playing the piano, although I eventually learned how to play the guitar and violin, as well. Each instrument has its own flair, but all of them soothe the soul and entertain people.

There are a lot of music stores where you can buy quality instruments in the Philippines. There are rentals of musical instruments, as well, so the decision to buy or rent is entirely up to you.

Every musician knows a bit of music theory. For non-musicians, music theory refers to the fundamentals of music, which include musical notation. This involves learning how to read sheet music, which is how musicians play different pieces. Music has its own language and it may seem difficult to understand at first, but it is doable with some practice and determination.

There are different articles available on the Internet that can teach you how to read sheet music. In musical notation, each note corresponds to a certain pitch and symbolizes a beat that indicates the piece’s rhythm for that part. These are the basics; learning them can help you greatly.

Books that include practice exercises and some of the basics of music theory

What’s amazing about musical notation and music theory, in general, is that if you have a solid foundation in it, you can apply your learnings to all of the musical instruments out there. That is why music teachers often stress its importance. Starting your musical journey the right way can prove to be very helpful.

Nothing is more tempting than a new episode of a famous K-drama you’ve been wanting to watch. However, self-control is important. Most successful musicians establish a time for practice each day, ranging from 30 minutes to an hour or more, and they stick to it. Even if you’re not aiming to be a world-class musician, sticking to your practice time can help you develop important skills aside from the musical techniques you will acquire.

Everyone should have a certain time for practice; having a clock nearby can help you stay focused.

Of course, before you practice playing a certain piece, you must do some warmup exercises first. These exercises can help you solidify your technique and make you a better musician. When you practice regularly, things often get easier quickly and you may become qualified to play harder pieces and learn more difficult techniques.

A musical journey is never enough without a performance. Your music is not meant for you alone. It is meant to be shared with others. It is not necessary to perform in front of a huge crowd; you can also play for a few of your loved ones at first. The feeling when you play for others is amazing, and I’m sure that you’ll reach the same conclusion when you do. Of course, the nerves are there at first; but once you get used to it and give it your all, you are sure to put smiles on the faces of those you perform for.

It is nice to look for inspiration and watch them perform, too. A little inspiration can bring you somewhere, and they can serve as a fuel when you lack motivation. Don’t be afraid to explore different genres and listen to various artists as music is a universal language that you can share with other people.

Music is a wonderful thing and having your own musical journey, even if you aren’t aspiring to play professionally, will truly be a blessing to you and the people around you. It can also serve as a soothing cup of tea on a cool morning, or a personal form of relaxation; and when you use it to destress, you will be more than thankful that you started a musical journey of your own.
