So The “Five-Second Rule” For Dropping Food On The Floor May Be Real

Ever dropped a potato chip on the floor and rushing to pick it up so it won’t go to waste, declaring “WALA PANG 5 SECONDS!” to avoid judgmental stares from people?

As it turns out, the 5-second rule may be real… sort of.

According to a report from the Metro, Professor Anthony Hilton, a germ expert from Aston University, said:

“Food is unlikely to have picked up harmful bacteria from a few seconds spent on an indoor floor”

Do you hear slobs rejoicing, now?

Though of course this isn’t an absolute rule, saving just about anything that’s been dropped less than five seconds or automatically tossing food that’s remained on the ground beyond five seconds. The best way is to do a simple observation.

Hilton says that if the food item is “visibly contaminated with dirt”, avoid eating it.

While this sounds like common sense, we’d be surprised at the number of people who would need this advisory. Sigh.
