Japanese PM to Name Adopted Philippine Eagle ‘Sakura’

Japanese Prime Ministed Shinzo Abe adopted a rescued Philippine eagle during his recent trip to the Philippines. What is even more interesting (and possibly an envy to many) is that it will be getting a Japanese name, Sakura (cherry blossoms).

The naming rites will be held on January 13 at the Waterfront Hotel in Lanang, Davao City, which is President Rodrigo Duterte’s hometown.

Although the Philippine eagle will not attend the naming rites, since it will be stressful for it to leave its natural habitat, PM Abe will receive a photo instead.

According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, “The eagle, which had been shot with a pellet gun  in the abdomen, was rescued last month near a river in Talaingod, Davao del Norte province.”

PM Abe was in the Philippines for a two-day state visit. He is the first foreign head of the state to visit President Duterte’s hometown.
