Empowered women and outer space won big at United States box offices over the weekend as Theodore Melfi’s biographical drama Hidden Figures superceded Star Wars flick Rogue One, with $22.8 million from 2,471 theaters as it expanded nationwide.
While the two films were beating each other out for the no. 1 spot, Hidden Figures eventually edged out Rogue One.
Hidden Figures tells the obscured real-life story of female African-American mathematicians who helped NASA launch the first men into space despite a segregated workplace and sexism. The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae.
