Miriam Company of One’s Sole to Soul: 6 Important Shoes Presented Through Dance

Dance is one of the most beautiful art forms. Dancers are able to use movement and music to express themselves and reveal their emotions. And more importantly, they tell a story.

Sole to Soul was the benefit dance concert of the Miriam College Company of One, and this was a prime example of the brilliant story telling brought about by dance! I absolutely love a good dance show, and this was definitely no exception! It was a fun and refreshing back-to-school concert that showed everyone in the audience the real meaning of girl power. It was a showcase of the versatility of the Company of One as they performed different styles of choreography in every piece. The concert also featured numerous other guest performers that were all also a pleasure to watch!

More than just a back-to-school celebration, Sole to Soul also served as a fundraising event for the HERO Foundation Inc.

Just as the title reveals, the Sole to Soul concert was all about a girl’s favorite thing: shoes! And they showed us the different stories that each shoe can tell!

6. School Shoes

The Miriam College uniform isn’t complete without school shoes, and the opening AVP was all about the first day of school! The start of the concert was just like the start of the schoolyear: cheerful and upbeat! They started the dance like a normal school setting: people studying, sleeping, goofing around, but all got together and performed a powerful first number!

5. Heels

The fun and upbeat the mood changed quickly to sultry and sexy. Stunning in their high heels, the girls of Miriam Company showed exactly how fierce they are with this burlesque-inspired piece. These dancers definitely committed to the style, even though it probably wasn’t easy doing an entire routine in those shoes!

4. Sneakers

Three times we got to see the different stories of these comfortable and convenient shoes.

The first time was in a heartwarming tale of a girl finding her perfect match. I just love lyrical dances, and this one showed brilliant choreography, as well as emotions! Kudos also to the pogi girls who had to perform as boys in this piece, they couldn’t have done it better than guys themselves. The dance ended with our leading lady still having not found the one— until an actual guy came and saved the day! #Kilig

The next was the sneakers we use in competitions. Streetdance is definitely one of the more intense sports, and these girls got competitive! Alternating between the two ‘fighting’ groups , we got to see that, when it comes to dance, the Company of One isn’t a team you should be messing with! They also showed us that sometimes, enemies can end up as friends (after a couple of pretty mean dance battles).

The third didn’t even need a story! Just straight hiphop, as a lot of other good dance routines do it! Great choreography + beautiful dancers = awesome routine! This was a great way to close the first half of the show.

3. Vans

One of the quirkiest, most colorful segments was this upbeat dance. The girls unleashed their inner children in their multi-colored Vans shoes and their adorable denim overalls. Through their happy-go-lucky, playful piece, they showed how cute they really are!

2. Combat Boots

Nothing’s more difficult than military school! The Company of One showed their tough side, opening up the piece with some strong and serious moves. But this story showed that no matter what you wear, you can’t hide who you truly are. In this case: a camouflage uniform can’t hide you’re fun and flirty attitude. I really appreciated the juxtaposition between the serious army set-up, and the true-blue girly demeanor of the dancers in their choreography, as well: taking it from power to femme by just taking off the jackets!

1. Barefoot

The last dance before their finale was definitely the perfect story to tell. Sometimes, when you get frustrated with life, get caught up with all your worries, or just get stressed and fed up, the best thing to do is to let go first and offer it to Him. More than anything, this was the Company’s way of showing what the team is all about: “ONE move, ONE heart, ONE passion, ONE goal… to honor the One who gave us our talents”. This emotional, contemporary hip hop style piece was definitely my favorite, especially for the important message it sends and the genuine heart and passion they revealed in this dance.
