7 Unconventional Strong Female Characters That Deserve More Attention

3. Jane Villanueva (Jane the Virgin)

Jane has been through a lot, what with being a pregnant virgin and all. Aside from that, she had to figure out being a single mother while grieving the death of a loved one. I love this character because she was able to find the courage to keep going even when the world was weighing down on her. I also love that she has a heart of gold and will help even people who have wronged her. But what I love the most about Jane is that she allows herself to be open about her true feelings and she’s not afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve. Both men and women need to know that showing emotions during difficult times is a normal, human thing and it doesn’t mean we’re weak.

2. Maeve Wiley (Sex Education)

As a social outcast with absent parents, Maeve learned to stand on her own two feet without anyone’s help. Even with her infamous reputation, she is unashamed and still does her own thing. Maeve is conventionally strong in that she stands up for herself and doesn’t care about what people think of her. What makes her a great character, though, is that her tough bad girl image is only one side of her. She’s also intelligent, surprisingly sensitive, and is actually kind of a sweetheart. Maeve may hate nearly everyone at her school, especially the people who slut-shame her, but she won’t turn her back on another girl in need.

1. Tina Belcher (Bob’s Burgers)

If you’ve ever been a teenage girl, you can probably relate to Tina Belcher. She’s quirky, socially awkward, insecure, and kind of boy-crazy but Tina also isn’t pigeonholed into one specific archetype. Yes, she’s socially awkward most of the time, but she also isn’t afraid to pursue her crush, Jimmy Junior (despite being ignored and rejected many, many times). She has her insecurities, as we all do, but there are moments where she’s incredibly self-assured. Tina’s just a regular teenager with both good and bad days, but she tries to be her best self throughout all the obstacles that come with growing up.
