Will Duterte Grant Robin Padilla an Executive Clemency?

Actor Robin Padilla may be granted an executive clemency, if President Rodrigo Duterte approves the list of 87 individuals prepared by the Board of Pardons and Parole (BPP) under the Department of Justice.

If granted, Padilla will be allowed to vote, travel, and run for public office.

His lawyer, Rudolf Jurado, revealed that he applied for Padilla’s clemency last week, and even forced the actor to sign the application. According to him, Padilla was hesitant because he didn’t want the public to think he was granted clemency because of his support for President Duterte.

During the elections, Padilla was vocal about his support of the then Davao City mayor in Mindanao.

Padilla was convicted by the Angeles City regional trial court in April 1994 and sentenced up to 21 years in prison for illegal possession of high-powered firearms. He served three years in the New Bilibid Prison, and was given a conditional pardon by then president Fidel V. Ramos. The pardon expired in 2003.

An executive clemency is a power of the president to pardon a person convicted of a crime or to shorten or reduce the sentence.
