Sixteen Bars’ Broadway Open Mic: I Believe!

There was a time in my life where I only used to dream about going to musical theatre pub-esque night, just like New York’s 54 Below, a laid-back yet exciting room that caters showtunes, but in Manila and my wallet wouldn’t end up empty. By the magic Sondheim-dust, that isn’t a fantasy anymore! Thank Webber!

Held at Dito: Bahay ng Sining last Saturday, April 25,  one of the first few Broadway-themed open mics in the country and this one by the budding theatre company, Sisteen Bars.

It has all the jist of a thrilling night out

How it worked was, participants were to bring their own sheet music or have one printed by the café’s front desk, with an accompanimist at the ready. Songs performed varied from Broadway smash hits like, Once, In The Heights and of course, tunes from Wicked, to Off-Broadway composers like Kerrigan & Lowdermilk, Scott Alan and Carner and Gregor.

Dito’s walls witnessed great talents and performaces that are not to be kid with! But of course, you don’t always have to take your stage time seriously, as were a fivesome that took the stage with Don’t Stop Believing from Rock of Ages and asked the folks to sing along.

Filled with collective fun and enthusiasm for the art of musical theatre, the atmosphere was friendly and good-natured so you don’t have to worry about that one note you might miss! Of course, I give in to the temptation of stage lights and belted some tunes from the rock musical, Rent. It was indeed a night of singing, laughter, singing, and some more singing, just the ideal night for the musical theatre nerd
