It was a regular afternoon and I was walking on my way home when I passed by an old woman selling her artworks in the sidewalk. I actually ignored her at first but then, I felt really guilty so I’ve decided to go back and approach her.
Her name is Jhalanie Matuan. She’s a homeless artist who sells her artworks for as low as P 150.00 to gather enough funds for her kidney operation as she had been diagnosed with kidney cancer.
During our conversation, Jhalanie showed me a letter from Ms. Marichu Tellano of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) addressed to Secretary Judy Taguiwalo of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DWSD) regarding her condition.
She also mentioned that she already found a sponsor and an organ donor for her operation on the second week of February.
However, she still needs around P 5,000.00 in order for her to go back to Pampanga and process the referral documents required before the said operation.
Since she was staying in the sidewalk, both day and night, somebody stole her bag containing her cellphone and all the initial money she had. Good thing and through the generosity of other people, she was able to earn a few again yet still lacking the amount she needs.
