Lea Salonga is one of theater’s darlings. After all, she played the lead role of Kim in Miss Saigon on Broadway and the West End, and both Eponine and Fantine in Les Miserables for Broadway. She has also won an Olivier, a Tony, a Drama Desk Award,  an Outer Critics Award, and a Theatre World award.

Now, she can add another achievement because she is now a Grammy nominee.

She, along with the cast of Once On This Island, has been nominated for Best Musical Theater Album in the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.

The news was announced by Salonga on Instagram, with the caption: Had to actually go to Grammy.com to see if it was true. And it’s true! I am officially a Grammy nominee!!! It may be a while before I get any sleep tonight! So thrilled to share this with my Island family. And that at 47 years old, one can still have a first!”

Once On This Island tells the story of a girl in a tropical island who uses the power of love to bring people together. Based on Rosa Guy’s 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl, the story has been transformed into a musical in 1990. It has since won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 1995, a Tony for Best Revival of a Musical in 2018, and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lighting Design for a Musical in 2018.

Salonga plays the role of Erzulie, the goddess of love.

Congratulations on this achievement, Lea!
