Can you hear the sound of hysteria?
That’s the sound of fans screaming when it was confirmed that the jukebox musical American Idiot, with music from Green Day’s 2004 rock album of the same name, has been given the green light for a film adaptation by HBO.
Rumors of an adaptation began since the musical premiered in 2010, with rumors going around that Tom Hanks would be producing it. The adaptation was confirmed in 2013, and playwright Rolin Jones revealed that he finished the script the following year.
Now, Green Day vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong announced that the adaptation has been given the go signal by HBO. He told NME, “That’s the plan right now, yeah. We’ve got a green light from HBO, and the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment.”
He will also reprise his role as St. Jimmy, which he played on Broadway.
American Idiot tells the story of three friends who are torn between following their dreams in the city or staying in the suburbs. All the songs from the album were used, as well as songs from 21st Century Breakdown, and an original song for the musical called “When It’s Time.”
It was nominated for three Tony Awards in 2010, including Best Musical, but it won Best Scenic Design of a Musical and Best Lighting Design of a Musical. The following year, it won the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.
