Disclosure in Manila 2014: Latching on to Disco

When one half of the dynamic DJ duo Disclosure, Guy Lawrence, asked “Manila, are you ready to party?” the crop-top-skimpyp-skirt laden crowd of the World Trade Convention Hall responded with a resounding ecstatic roar; and party they did! All of Manila’s brooding younglings – a mix of college kids, A-listers and 20-something yuppies – rose to the challenge and did justice to Disclosure’s hypnotic 3-hour set with their recent stop at the World Trade Convention Center as part of their 2014 world tour. Photos courtesy of Vybe Productions, taken by Art Oca.

All senses were heightened in a mesmerising display of lights and sounds as brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence brought something new to the table with their genre of deep house music, much to the delight of local party-goers. With all the unnecessary hoopla and stage antics brought down to a minimum (their main feat being a shower of confetti at the final number), everyone’s attention was brought to their signature brand of discotheque music that seamlessly transitioned from one song to the next.

After the opening acts have successfully built up the hype, the party finally began with Disclosure playing “When a Fire Starts to Burn,” thus setting the pace for a night of pure dance music, which included favorites such as “F for You,” “Help Me Lose My Mind,” “White Noise,” and (gasp!) their mix of a club favorite – Pharell’s “Frontin’.”

We gotta say that Disclosure’s Manila set was not your usual rave fare, as their percussion-heavy instrumentals staved off heavy fist pumping and feet stomping in favor of easier, groove-heavy dancing; something you’d love to have as music at an exclusive and upscale nightclub, rather than a massive, sweaty dance hall. The British brothers delivered, nonetheless, as their hit original compositions and a few fun remixes had people on their heels well into the night and onto the wee hours of the morning.

All the hype and excitement that had been building up eventually led to their much-awaited finale, when Disclosure’s biggest hit “Latch” played and everyone practically lost it – the hypnotic subliminal track just begging for a partner to dance with, a bit of irrepressible PDA, and apparently, sitting on your boyfriend’s shoulder (as per every couple present that night – it spread like wildfire, one couple up front did it and a bunch of others soon followed suit).

Coupley rave antics aside, the night was sheer awesomeness as every partyphile was reintroduced to a more sophisticated style of music that only Disclosure can produce. Much kudos to the brothers (who happen to be just my age!) for such an epic night in Manila!

We hope everyone had as much fun as we did that night! ‘Til the next party! 🙂
