Madonna is no stranger to controversy, and she made a few ones during her two-day concert in Manila.

The first was a statement by Lipa archbishop Ramon Arguelles, who asked why the Philippines is a favorite venue for blasphemy against God and the Holy Mother, referring to Madonna’s concert and Lady Gaga’s concert back in 2012. He also mentioned that Madonna is not even her real name, and that she is only using it to taunt Mother Mary.

It is worth noting that the Rebel Heart Tour and the Born This Way Ball in Manila were just one stop in a world tour. Also, Madonna’s birth name is Madonna Louise Ciccone.

The second is a statement by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), which commented on Madonna’s use of the Philippine flag as part of her outfit for her encore performance of “Holiday.” In her previous stops, Madonna wears the national flag of the country she is performing in.

Teodoro Atienza, chief of the Heraldry Section of NHCP, told radio station dzbb, “Ginawa pong katawa-tawa ang ating watawat. Ginawang tapis. Ginawang balabal ni Ms. Madonna.” (“She made fun of our flag. She made it her dress. She made it her scarf.”) He also said that the flag touched the floor.

Republic Act No. 8491 states that the Philippine flag shouldn’t be worn in whole or in part as a costume or uniform.

Atienza added that Madonna will still have to face justice even if she’s not familiar with the law.

But actress Anne Curtis has come to the defense of Madonna, saying that she just showed her love for the country.

She told reporters, “I think in a way, it should be shown na parang the love that she has for our country. I think kasi ngayon lang siya nakarating sa Philippines so ganon talaga.” (I think in a way, it should be shown the love that she has for our country. I think it’s because it’s the first time she’s been to the Philippines.)

She added, “I think everyone will have their own opinion, which is their right. As an artist, you know you will never be able to please everyone.”
