Last December 10 2012, the UP Chemical Engineering Society, Inc., co-presented by Planet Infinity, Vaseline, Garnier, Magnolia Ice Cream and Moonleaf, in cooperation with Pilipinas Shell, also brought to you by St. Francis Square Group of Companies, Caliraya Resort Club and Sun Cellular, with special thanks to Kusina Granados, hosted the 48th Annual Awitan: A Tribute to the Grammys at the Convenarium, Crossroad77.
The competition had participants from 14 different organizations, each with their own renditions of songs that have been recognized in The Grammy Awards and a Christmas-themed song to welcome the holiday season. The program also featured the UP Singing Ambassadors, UP Concert Chorus, Arkaira and Dancesport during its intermission breaks to entertain the crowd even more. To add to the excitement, the audience was also given a chance to win gift packs and certificates from the event’s sponsors, namely Vaseline, Planet Infinity and and MoonLeaf. Free ice cream and broadband kits were also provided by Magnolia Ice Cream and Sun, respectively.
The night summoned the most extraordinary song arrangements and performances of history’s most notable songs. In lieu of the holidays, the participating organizations also brought in the holiday cheer by charming the audience with their own versions of Christmas songs. In the end, 3 organizations stood out and took the top-ranks in the competition. In 3rd place came UP CURSOR with their rendition of Coldplay’s Grammy Award Song of the Year winning single, “Viva la Vida”. In 2nd place came UP ERG with their rendition of “Smooth” by Santana and Rob Thomas which won 3 Grammy awards in its year of release. The UP IE Club bagged the first place award with their breathtaking performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings” which, in its day, won a Grammy Award for Best Record and Song of the Year.
