Rick Riordan describes old Percy Jackson movies as ‘my life’s work going through a meat grinder’

With the recent celebrations surrounding the reboot of the Percy Jackson series on Disney+, acclaimed author Rick Riordan didn’t hold back in telling fans his honest thoughts about the Percy Jackson film that came out a decade ago.

On Twitter, Riordan threw some shade on the 2010 movie when he told a fan that Disney+ should have “censor[ed] the entire thing. Just two hours of blank screen.”

When fans told him how it made them happy knowing he disliked the two existing films that starred Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, and Brandon T. Jackson, he said: “Well, to you guys, it’s a couple hours entertainment. To me, it’s my life’s work going through a meat grinder when I pleaded with them not to do it. So yeah. But it’s fine. All fine. We’re gonna fix it soon.”

He further clarified that he never watched the movies nor does he ever intend to. “I judge them from having read the scripts, because I care most about the story. I certainly have nothing against the very talented actors. Not their fault. I’m just sorry they got dragged into that mess.”

The Percy Jackson movies have been infamous within the fandom for straying from the original text. Fortunately, the upcoming TV reboot promises to be “a faithful on-screen adaptation” with each season focusing on one of the five books in the series, starting with “The Lightning Thief.”

“There will be much more news in the future, but for now, we have a lot of work to do! Buckle up, demigods. It’s going to be a fantastic, exciting ride!” Riordan said.
