It has been announced that Justin Roiland, co-creator of Rick and Morty and voice of the titular characters, is leaving the show.

In a statement, Adult Swim/Cartoon Network/Boomerang senior VP of Communications Marie Moore, said, “Adult Swim has ended its association with Justin Roiland.”

This is because Roiland was charged with “one count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, or deceit in Orange County.” This is in relation to an alleged incident in 2020 with an unnamed woman that Roiland was dating. Other allegations have been made against Roiland on social media.

Roiland pled not guilty and was released on a $50,000 bond (roughly P2,723,825).

Pre-trial hearings have taken place and Roiland will return for another on April 27, 2023.

T. Edward Welbourn, Roiland’s attorney, has called news reports of the case inaccurate. He also said, “To be clear, not only is Justin innocent but we also have every expectation that this matter is on course to be dismissed once the district attorney’s office has completed its methodical review of the evidence.”

Rick and Morty is an adult animated science fiction show that follows the adventures of mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith. It has been praised by viewers for its content and humor.

In 2018, Adult Swim ordered 70 episodes of Rick and Morty and the show hasn’t even reached the halfway point. It is set to reach up to season 10.

The show has consistently received rave reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes giving the sixth season a 91%. According to the review-aggregation website for film and TV, “Bookended by some memorable serialized developments, Rick and Morty‘s sixth season has a lot of fun in between as it explores whether the universe’s most toxic genius can actually grow as a person.”

The show will still continue even with Roiland out of the picture. Reports say that he will still be credited as co-creator, but co-creator Dan Harmon will be recognized as the showrunner. Roiland will be replaced as the voice actor of both Rick and Morty.

Hulu, who works with Roiland on Solar Opposites and Koala Man, has cut him from the projects.

Roiland has also resigned from the video game studio Squanch Games, which he co-founded.
