Filipinos are Pretending to be Harvard Students in New Trend, We Investigate How it Started

The internet is a strange place. While it can be a breeding ground for hate and trolls, it can also be a venue for people to express their silly side through memes and trends. I’m not a regular mom, I’m a cool mom, so I usually spot these trends before they become big. I remember friends were so confused when I was posting about cakes. So I was shocked that I have no idea what the Harvard memes meant.

Harvard University trended on Twitter yesterday when Filipinos reposted photos from the campus and pretended to be students there.

So what does it mean? We investigated what it is and how it started.

According to my co-editor Therese Aseoche, “Harvard just posted photos of their campus and Pinoys started commenting/sharing then with jokes about how they ‘miss’ it as if they studied there.”

No one seems to know its beginnings but that hasn’t stopped people from sharing photos and adding their made-up stories. A friend, who requested anonymity, said, “Nakita ko lang friends ko from [redacted] nagse-share with funny captions so yon as a bida bida nakisali ako. Gusto ko pa rin malaman kung sino nagpasimuno.”

Meanwhile, some also went to the Harvard University Facebook page to comment their “memories.”

Sen. Sonny Angara was unwittingly included as Filipinos found his Harvard ID, which the senator posted in 2015. Stephen Migallen, an entrepreneur friend of mine, posted his own take on the Harvard ID. Like a lot of people, Migallen is also not sure how the trend started.

I decided to ask someone younger and who might be more in touch with pop culture. Nadine Hocson, a student, shared, “some people started changing their DP frames to the “Harvard 2020” frame. Parang back to school thing.”

Is that how it started? We’re not sure. Does anything matter anymore? Are we all cake?
