Modern English is a new wave band best remembered for their songs “I Melt with You,” “Hands Across the Sea,” and “Ink and Paper”… Notable albums were their debut Mesh and Lace, followed by After the Snow, and Ricochet Days.

Formed in Colchester, Essex, England, in 1979 by Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar, vocals), and Michael Conroy (bass, vocals), Modern English were originally known as The Lepers. The group expanded to “Modern English” when Richard Brown (drums) and Stephen Walker (keyboards) were subsequently added to the line-up of the band.

On the other hand, THE ALARM were part of an early-’80s wave of bands (the Call, Big Country  and the Waterboys among them) who dealt in soaring anthems inspired by the righteous idealism of punk.

The ALARM was formed in Rhyl, Wales in 1981 by vocalist/guitarist Mike Peters who’d started out in a local punk band called the Toilets along with Alarm drummer Nigel Twist.

The ALARM is best known for the hits Absolute Reality, Blaze of Glory, 68 Guns, and Rain in the Summertime, and their album Declaration which spun most of their hits.
