We were lucky enough to interview the creator AMY during a recent visit to Japan and got to know this eggcellent character a little bit more.

Gudetama is a result of a competition.
AMY shares that the character of Gudetama was actually one of the ideas that she submitted when Sanrio had a food-based character competition.
Gudetama is partly inspired by millennials.
While eating a raw egg rice bowl at home, AMY shares that she saw the color of the egg and thought about its nutritional value and how it had the potential to be cooked in so many different ways, but she felt that it was so unmotivated too. “And then I also thought about the millennials in Japan,” she adds. “These people basically come from a very good background and have had a good education but they’re not competitive and have kind of given up in a competitive society. Those were some of the overlapping ideas when I designed the character.”
People love Gudetama’s plump butt.
AMY admits that she was initially afraid that this character would not be well-received because he is so unmotivated and lazy, but this is what actually makes him so cute and relatable. Plus, his plump butt unexpectedly has received a huge reception worldwide.

Gudetama is meant to give you a sense of comfort.
AMY shares that she hopes Gudetama gives people a kind of comfort that there are other people out there who have it worse. However, when seeing Gudetama, you may also feel like he is saying certain things on your behalf. Another message that AMY hopes Gudetama will convey is that you don’t really have to try too hard. “It makes you relaxed and be more carefree.”
