“Batgirl” Casts First Trans Character in a DC Film – and She’s Filipina

HBO Max will be releasing Batgirl soon and it will also feature the first-ever transgender character in a live-action DC Comics movie. Alysia Yeoh, the best friend of Batgirl, was also the first major transgender character in a DC comic book. In the feature film, she will be played by Ivory Aquino, a Filipino-American actress born in the Philippines. Congratulations!

In an interview with PEOPLE back in 2017, Ivory Aquino had expressed that she actually almost came close to giving up acting because she felt like there weren’t many roles for transgender actors. She has since starred as Juliet in The Drilling Company’s Romeo and Juliet for Bryant Park Shakespeare in New York and as Cecilia Chung in When We Rise.

We can’t wait to see her in Batgirl, which is set to premiere on HBO Max later this year.
