Access to quality housing is a basic human right, and yet so many Filipinos are left homeless or with inadequate housing conditions. As the Philippines is faced with problems such as poverty, overpopulation, and frequent natural disasters, there is no doubt as to why the lack of sustainable housing is one of its oldest and most prominent issues.
Nonetheless, numerous organizations have taken charge by finding innovations and executing initiatives that aim to contribute in solving the issue. Some of these include advancements in the civil engineering scene for more sustainable development, which is the case for Project ALAS.
Project ALAS is the yearlong social service arm of the University of the Philippines Association of Civil Engineering Students (UP ACES) focused on offering concrete solutions to real-life problems through civil engineering concepts. In the previous years, Project ALAS has executed several initiatives from designing trash bins and hosting interactive workshops for optimal waste segregation, as well as a waste analysis and categorization study– benefiting over 4000 beneficiaries to date. This year’s project aims to take this initiative to a higher level by tackling the lack of quality housing in the country.
Alongside their project partner, 4P for People, a Norwegian x Philippine development organization that has been working in Manila for 10 years, Project ALAS will construct a Community Building for the benefit of at least 10 families in Nasugbu, Batangas.
To get a glimpse on how the project will be executed and how to help in this cause, Project ALAS will be holding a webinar entitled, “House It Going: Present & Future of Housing in the Philippines,” which tackles the current state of housing in the country and its future possibilities to be held this September 4, 2021 at 1:00 PM on Zoom and FB Live.
The webinar will consist of a variety of talks addressing sustainability, the state of housing in the country, and the innovative use of cement bamboo frame technology in construction.
