Iza Calzado is joining the many powerful Filipina women in history to ever play the coveted role of Darna, the fictional superheroine created by Mars Ravelo.
ABS-CBN Network announced the great news on Thursday, August 12, that Iza will be making an appearance in the upcoming television show as the “First Darna” who will pass on her powers to her daughter, Narda, to be played by Jane De Leon.

“Finally, I can claim to be part of the Pinoy superhero history! I almost had the chance in the past, but God had other plans,” Calzado was quoted saying in the official press release. “I was not meant to be that Darna but He surely prepared me to play this Darna.”
It can be recalled that Iza was originally going to play the role of the heroine herself in the 2005 “Darna” TV series but had to be recast due to problems involving her physique. The role ended up going to Angel Locsin who continues to be recognized by Filipinos as the most iconic “Darna” to ever be introduced.
Iza also revealed that she was attached to this project since 2017 when it was still Liza Soberano who was expected to play the character. Liza had to exit the project in 2019 due to a finger injury and was replaced by Jane. The new “Darna” was also initially going to be a full-length movie but was turned into a TV show instead. The project was also passed on to different directors throughout the years, first to Erik Matti then to Jerrold Tarog, both of whom left due to personal reasons.
But we’re sure that the long wait for her will soon be over as filming will officially begin this September!
