Another Filipino is set to take on the international stage. Chai Fonacier, a Filipino actress known for her roles in Patay na si Hesus and Respeto, has joined the cast of the upcoming psychological thriller Nocebo.

Fonacier will star with Eva Green and Mark Strong. Green has starred in Dark Shadows, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Casino Royale, and Penny Dreadful. Meanwhile, Strong has appeared in Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service and its sequel The Golden Circle, and Shazam!

Nocebo follows Green, a fashion designer who gets a mysterious illness that confuses even her doctors. Fonacier plays a Filipino carer who uses traditional folk healing to uncover something terrifying. Strong plays Green’s husband.

According to the exclusive report by Variety, “the film’s themes explore consumerism, human exploitation and the fast fashion industry, as well as the brain’s power in deciding whether to harm or cure the physical body.”

After all, the term nocebo is the opposite of placebo. Variety reports that the term “refers to the Nocebo Effect, in which negative thinking on the part of a patient results in a more negative outcome.”

Nocebo will be set between London and Manila. It is currently in production in Ireland.

The film is directed by Lorcan Finnegan, who helmed the sci-fi thriller Vivarium.
