Youth-Led Organizations Advocate for the Importance of Mental Health amidst a Pandemic

The U.P. Pre-Medical Society, in collaboration with Labang Pangkalusugan, announced KAPWA, a month-long mental health advocacy campaign catered to the youth that revolved around raising awareness and providing different views concerning pressing mental health issues amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by the Kapwa Theory in Filipino psychology, KAPWA highlights one’s shared sense of self and pakikipagkapwa, even amidst the isolation and uncertainties brought about by the pandemic.

Along with releasing various informative posts about self-care, the highlighted event of the campaign is a panel discussion-type webinar featuring different accredited physiatrists and health advocates. The webinar is free to attend and scheduled on October 17, 2020 from 3:30pm to 6:00 pm. You may sign up for a slot here: bit.ly/KAPWAWebinar

The scope of the webinar tackles the current national situation of mental health, the importance of mental wellness and self-care, and how to navigate through the struggles brought upon by the pandemic.

Participating in the webinar serves as an opportunity for the audience—the youth—to gain more knowledge about mental health from a different perspective, one that stresses the impact of nationwide conditions and policies on one’s well-being. Attendees will be able to personally learn and discuss from experts in the field.

The U.P. Pre-Medical Society is known for its community-based projects catering to UP students, children and elderly from various foundations, different barangays within and

outside of Metro Manila, and the like. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Society has chosen to focus its efforts on what it does best—giving back and giving life. They have raised PHP 175,000 for numerous beneficiaries affected by COVID-19, and have also held relief operations.

Labang Pangkalusugan is a youth-led organization that spreads awareness and sheds light on pressing health matters through social media. Besides this, they have also held various initiatives that lend a hand to Filipino healthcare workers and marginalized communities which were achieved through raising funds for rRT-PCT COVID-19 test kits and PPE donation drives.
