POGO workers return home, seen to empty Metro Manila offices and condos

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect businesses in the Philippines, many Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGO) workers are now returning home. POGO workers in the Philippines are mostly Chinese nationals.

During a virtual senate hearing last Wednesday, September 23, Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III said that a number of offshore gaming operators were canceling their office lease contracts.

This exodus of POGO workers is seen to affect tax revenues in the country. As many workers continue to leave, offices and condominiums in Metro Manila are also expected to empty. Offshore gaming companies occupy 10% of the leasing spaces in Metro Manila.

Aside from real estate, other businesses that cater to POGO workers will also be affected by this.
