A member of the UP OCTA Research Team claimed on an interview with ABS-CBN Teleradyo that the Philippines is likely to see a flattening of the COVID-19 curve by the end of this month or September. “Flattening does not mean it is over. It means there are still cases but the number of cases is on the decline. Flattening is a long process,” Professor Guido David said.
According to David, the research team observed that the R0 trend was slowing down from 1.5 to 1.1. The R0 pertains to the reproduction rate of the disease and indicates how contagious an infectious disease is.
He also said that the number of new cases being documented was on the decline which is a “very good” indication. Although it will be crucial to sustain the flattening of the curve in two weeks to one month, it is said to be necessary for cases to go down to a “very manageable level.” The professor cautioned that if efforts are not sustained, cases may still surge again.
