LOOK: ‘Mulan’ Actor Donnie Yen Celebrates Hong Kong’s Return to ‘Motherland’

Last August, the #BoycottMulan movement began when Crystal Liu (Liu Yifei) who plays Mulan in the live-action remake of the Disney classic made public her support for the Hong Kong police. The hashtag trended once again when Donnie Yen, portraying the character of Commander Tung, celebrated the handover of Hong Kong to China.

Yen shared a post on his Facebook commemorating the Handover last July 1. “Today is the celebration day for Hong Kong returned to motherland China 23 years,” he captioned a photo of himself meeting Chinese President and Communist Party Chairman Xi Jinping.

The rest of his post reads: “Recalling such memorable night in 2017 where I had the privilege to performed with piano Mastro Lang Lang for Chairman Xi and wife along with several hundred guests who came to watch the show and celebrated the night!”

The post sparked heavy criticism from netizens who considered Yen to be taking a Pro-China stance in an increasingly fraught political atmosphere.
