This is why you shouldn’t abbreviate the year 2020 on documents

Attention, everyone! There are lots of scams out there and now we’re trying to work against one coming true. In short: Please write out the year “2020” in full. Don’t abbreviate it.

Why’s that, you ask? It’s because someone can manipulate it to a different year altogether. For example, you have the date January 15, 2020. You might be tempted to write 1/15/20 don’t. Someone can easily add numbers after the 20 and make it another date in the 2000s. They can change it to 1/15/2017, 1/15/2013, etc. And making that mistake on a document can compromise those documents or checks. Better yet, you can spell everything out to January 15, 2020. To be totally safe.

Dates

The same can be applied in the future. Someone could date your check with 2023 instead and it’ll be active again in that year. Or the documents themselves might just be fraudulent.

While we haven’t heard of any instances of people getting scammed this way, let’s start the year by not giving them a chance to.
