Reel- and real-life couple James Reid and Nadine Lustre decided to go as another famous duo for Halloween: the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. The two went for a modern twist by dressing up as the 1996 film version, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.
James and Nadine’s version is of the iconic costume party, where Romeo and Juliet first meet. The former dressed up as a knight, while the latter came as an angel.
The actor posted a photo of the two on Instagram, with the caption, “She’s an angel and I’m her knight in shining armour… HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOVE!”
Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet was met with positive reviews. According to Rotten Tomatoes, which gave the film a 72% rating, the director’s “visual aesthetic is as divisive as it is fresh and inventive.”
The film went on to win the Silver Bear for Best Actor for DiCaprio and the Alfred Bauer Prize for Luhrmann. The director was also nominated for the Golden Bear Award for Best Picture. At the Academy Awards in 1997, Romeo + Juliet was nominated for Best Art Direction/Set Decoration. In 2005, the British Film Institute included it in a list of movies people should watch by the age of 14.
